A Cisco report has stated that this year the number of mobile devices (including smartphones, tablets, laptops and internet-capable phones) will outnumber the number of humans.

The new research states that by the end of 2013 there will be more internet-connected mobile devices than there are people in the world.

It is predicted that huge growth in the market in Asia, the Pacific and Africa will lead to the number of smartphones and tablets reaching over 7bn – the world’s population.

However, the extensive growth will put existing internet infrastructure under a lot of strain and new systems will have to be developed and put in place. The answer could be an IPv6 system which could provide every device user with their own private internet connection.

The Cisco report also found that:

  • Mobile video currently uses over half the data transmitted around the world and by 2017 this could account for two-thirds of it.
  • Average data consumption has increased by 81% from 2011 to 2012
  • 92% of current global mobile data traffic is consumed by smartphones
