£107bn predicted online spend in 2014. Will your business get its share?

Whether you provide goods or services, this internet spending boom could mean a significant increase in business, providing your website works well and is easy to find.

New figures show just how much money customers are now spending without even stepping foot inside a store, and experts predict this online spending will rocket even faster in 2014.

The figures, from the IMRG-Capgemini eRetail Sales Index, show a staggering £97bn was spent online last year, with this expected to be more like £107bn in 2014.

Mobiles and tablets are being used for around 27% of this spending, worth around £3bn. This is a growth of 138% from the previous year.

IMRG chief information officer Tina Spooner said: ”With online shopping having become part of our everyday lives, the growth levels we are seeing in the e-retail market won’t be slowing down any time soon.”

Mark Lewis, online director at John Lewis, said: “Online now accounts for around 30% of overall sales, up from 25% in 2012.

“Our customers continue to evolve how they shop, and are increasingly blending stores, online and mobile devices.”

No, we’re not talking about whether black is in or out or whether you should be wearing drainpipes or flares, we’re talking about internet trending.

Facebook has now made it easier for you to keep in the know, with its new Trending product.

The Trending list appears on the right hand of your news feed on Facebook and allows you to see what the most popular topics worldwide and within your world at any one time.

Chris Struhar, from Facebook, explains: “The list is personalised, including topics based on things you’re interested in and what is trending across Facebook overall.

“Each topic is accompanied by a headline that briefly explains why it is trending. You can click on any headline to see the most interesting posts from your friends or Pages that are talking about that particular topic.”

This is similar to Trends and hashtags on Twitter. But how is all this useful to your business?

Knowing what makes people tick is a valuable piece of information and can help you make the most of your own internet presence.

You can also cash in (or hashtag in) on popular subjects if they have any relevance to your product or business. For example, as I write, one trend is a news story about an underground station control room being flooded by quick setting concrete. If your business sells building materials, this could be a publicity godsend.

So, keep an eye on those trends as you go about your daily business and take advantage of them whenever you can.
