As a digital marketing expert, I often hear business owners apologise for their lack of knowledge when it comes to websites and social media.

I always give the same answer – it’s nothing to apologise or be embarrassed about. If your business needs legal work doing (with contracts or perhaps when buying a new premises etc) would you try to do this yourself? Do you do all your own accounting and payroll work? If you were running an ad campaign, would you do all the design of this yourself?

You aren’t expected to be an expert of everything just because you run your own business – and the ever changing world of the internet is not likely to be something you are a specialist in.

Digital marketing has become an increasingly complex area and as such, it is now a recognised area of expertise with its own training programmes and qualifications.

Working with a digital expert to promote your business does not make you some kind of ‘dinosaur’ who doesn’t know how to use the internet, it makes you a very savvy business owner who understands the importance and complexity of this area in today’s world.

Search engine optimisation, having a website that is mobile and tablet-friendly, the best ways to use social media to your advantage… these are just some of the areas of knowledge that your business can benefit from.

Other areas include: using website stats and analytics tools to your advantage, getting your content right, engaging your customers online…

You can’t be a jack of all trades, so don’t be ashamed to ask for help.
