If you are working hard tweeting and not getting many followers, perhaps it’s time to rethink your Twitter strategy.

It can be disheartening when you have a Twitter account and try as you may you don’t seem to get many new followers.  Perhaps a new study will give you a few pointers.

An academic study produced by scientists tells Twitter users what to do to get more followers.

It may come as no surprise that in 41 per cent of tweets users talked about themselves.

Data from more than 500 Twitter users was studied by researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology over a 15-month period.

After looking at and studying over half a million tweets, the conclusion was that “expressing negative sentiments in tweets is the second most harmful factor to growing a Twitter audience.”

What this means is that if you want to get more followers avoid saying mean, negative things.

Throughout the study researchers recorded the growth in followers of each user and looked at a link between the content of the tweets and the size of the increase.

Scientists Eric Gilbert, C.J. Hutto and Sarita Yardi said the study was the “first longitudinal study of audience growth on Twitter to combine such a diverse set of theory inspired variables,” according to The Poynter Institute.

“Informational content attracts followers with an effect that is roughly thirty times higher than the effect of [personal] ‘meformer’ content, which deters growth. We think this is due to the prevalence of weak ties on Twitter,” the study said.

So, if you want to attract more followers don’t just talk about yourself.

Among the Twitter accounts studied, in 41 per cent of tweets users talked about themselves while informational content accounted for just 24 per cent.

The study suggests that you need to be positive and not just talk about what you had for lunch, and also not fill your tweets with too many hashtags, maintain a detailed profile, tweet often and follow back those that follow you.
