Online marketing can seem like a minefield.  Nowadays many businesses operate solely online and it’s important you give the time needed to your online marketing.  Your website is your shop front and the Internet is the vehicle for putting your product in front of customers.

There are a few things you can do to ensure that you make the most of online marketing for your business.  First, try to keep up-to-date with what’s going on in the world of Internet marketing.  It can seem overwhelming when you start, but you will soon get to grips with it.  It really is best to embrace it and then choose which bits serve your business best and use them to your advantage.

Your website

Take a good look at your website.  You may be happy with it, but there are always things you can do to improve it further.  You need to evaluate it and see if the customer experience it delivers can be improved: is it easily navigated, is the content as fresh as it could be?  A website should be ever-evolving and never stand still.  You wouldn’t leave a shop window unchanged would you?

Content is King

Search engines place great emphasis on content and its quality in ranking your website in the search engine results pages (SERPs).  It is important to make sure that each page on your website has unique content: this includes the individual product pages.  Do not copy content across pages: spend time writing unique content for each page and it will serve you well in the search results.

Use social media

Social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook give you the chance to promote your business and reach a massive audience.  You can engage with potential customers and spread the word about your business.  Competitions are a great way to gain followers on Twitter and likes on Facebook.  Don’t be afraid of social media, but rather embrace it.

Start blogging

A blog is a great way to talk about what is happening in your business and industry.  You can blog from anywhere and talk about everything from new trends, products, news or competitions you are running.  You can link your blog to your social media accounts to help keep things easier to manage.  A blog is more unique, fresh content too: so the search engines will love it – and, consequently, your site.

Keep an eye on the competition

It’s always worth keeping an eye on the competition.  Take a look at what they are doing re online marketing.  It’s always worth keeping an open mind and you can always learn from others: sometimes it may be what to do; other times what not to try.

Use the analytics tools available

Not everyone can be a search engine optimisation (SEO) expert, but there are tools available that allow you to understand the traffic that your website is generating and help you see where improvements can be made.  There is lots of useful information available online about how to make best use of analytics and your website: so keep learning.

Get help if needed

You can’t afford to stand still with online marketing.  You must keep up with developments and if you don’t have time to do this perhaps it’s worth thinking about delegating the task to a reliable member of staff, or employ someone to do it for you.  The results will be worth it if you put in a bit of work.
